The Newsletter
What is a e-newsletter?
A digital newsletter (or E-Zine or e-mail newsletter or mailing, they all mean the same thing) is basically a simple e-mail message to which you can subscribe and that is being send to a large number of people. The newsletter doesn’t necessarily have to be send out on a regular bases. The company or association that wants to send out the newsletter, writes its content then pours it into an attractive lay-out and finally sends it out to a list of e-mail addresses (the mailing list). The newsletter ends up in your inbox as a classic e-mail message.
An e- newsletter is made out of 3 key elements:
- The content
This means “news” in the broad sense. Anything that might remotely be interesting to your clients is news: a new product, your annual open house, a concert, moving house, a contest, a recital, …etc. - The layout (graphic design)
Just as your website, your newsletter needs a look, a style that fits with your company’s corporate identity. But the newsletter is more flexible; on the one hand you can choose a template and just add text and/or images on the other hand you can graphically enhance each newsletter depending on the message. The choice you make depends on the kind of news you plan to send out to your clients. - Sending out the newsletter
Once the newsletter has been created (content & layout), you need a kind of “machine” to allow you to send it out to a specific list of e-mail addresses (these are your customers, your readers). But the machine does more than that: it adds and deletes subscriber, manages the failure notices, notifies readers that wish to subscribe or unsubscribe*…etc.
* Make unsubscribing easy
Always add the unsubscribe option in your newsletter and make sure it works well. People can get very upset if they keep getting your e-mails, while they don’t want them. If you don’t then your well intentioned newsletter will be considered spam!
Why send a newsletter?
It is a lot more cost efficient and profitable to make your company grow by selling your products to your existing customers then it is to find new customers and persuade them to buy your product. If you possess a contact list of business relations then you already have a very precious thing. This list can be put to very good use when combined with a quality newsletter. An e-newsletter raises the lifespan of your customers.
Every time you send out a newsletter, you secure the relationship between your company and your clients. The competition can always try and conquer the market by selling below the price, by copying your products or by mimicking your corporate identity, but they can never buy your list of contacts.
An e-newsletter raises the amount of customers and sales.
Because you send out your newsletter on a regular bases, your client, acquaintance or partner keeps you in mind. At the same It allows you to continuously praise your product assortment and services.
An e-newsletter is an inexpensive and fast method to send out a message. Once your database with email addresses has been created in the “machine” and your newsletter graphically designed, programmed and send; you can access your current and future customers immediately. Next to your email marketing campaign you can also send out advice, warnings, tips,…etc. as often as you like. It enables you to keep a very straightforward and to the point communication with rapid feedback.
An e-newsletter allows interactivity between you and your customers.
When you add a link to your own e-mail within the newsletter, which is good practice anyway, then contacting you becomes simple and easy. Comments can be made, information can be given, idea’s are being exchanged.
An e- newsletter strengthens your current advertising.
Your e-mail marketing is not at war with your website or print advertising It complements them and together they project a complete and professional approach towards your customers.
Finally when you put the cost of paper advertising next to that of making a digital e-mailing campaign, well it becomes quite clear that money is no longer the issue. This doesn’t mean you should stop using printed advertising, it simply means that in certain circumstances, when news needs to be spread quickly the newsletter is the best way to go.
The most obvious or direct advantage of an e-mailing is “savings”: it saves time, saves on print costs, paper cost, stamps cost, …etc. .

Watch out for: Phishingmail
A phishing mail looks like a professional mail, with real logos of well known banks and companies. It is an attempt to gain personal information from you, such as a password or credit card details. The content of the email is pure fantasy!

A stylesheet alows you to separate document content from document presentation. This separation can improve content accessibility, provide more flexibility and control for the whole website. But more importantly it allows you to update and transform your whole website by simply changing the code on one single document. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has therefor established standards.
